Q: I’ve tried so much stuff before to find some peace of mind, but I still feel overwhelmed. Why is this any different?
A: I’ve tried lots of stuff too, and these days I’m more interested in going to the source of experience rather than trying to fix its symptoms. It’s the difference between trying out a new flotation device every week, and realising you’re in the shallow end and can just stand up. We're going to hang out in the shallow end (it's the only place to be).
Q: I’m just built this way – do you think this will work for me?
A: When it comes to how our experience of life is created, we’re actually all built the same way – some of us just build up different thinking habits over time. The thing is, you’re built for reality, and if you’re troubled by feelings of overwhelm, stress or anxiety, you’re not living in reality (even if it seems really, really real). You’re living in an imagined future or remembered past. You’re swimming against the current, living in a misunderstanding of how life works. If you’d like to stop doing that, join me – it will be fun ;-)
Q: You’d be stressed too, if you were in my shoes. What makes you think this will help me?
A: Because, with all the people I’ve ever spoken to about this, there’s no one whose magnificence is not up to the circumstances they’re facing. There’s no one I’ve found who doesn’t have peace and resilience at their core. Can you think of anyone who’s been calm in a crisis? Maybe that’s been you sometimes? What’s that about? That’s what we’ll be exploring.
Q: My problems are real and I don’t want to stand in front of the mirror pretending all is well. Will you be making me do affirmations or other positive-thinking techniques?
A: No. Let’s just say what we’re exploring is beyond affirmations. We’re going upstream!
Q: Is this the CURE for stress and anxiety?
A: Who knows what you’ll see as you go through this introductory course, but one of the things I hope you’ll realise is that there’s nothing wrong with you. You don’t need fixing - there's no 'cure' required here. You don't need a 'serenity injection' - as you start to hear something helpful for yourself, you'll just find yourself shedding what's no longer required, and serenity, resilience, peace of mind will take care of themselves.
